Unlike other deck builders, Griftlands arms the player with two distinct sets of cards: a combat deck and a negotiation deck. The way you navigate these environments and progress the story is also unique. The game's setting, which is full of technocratic leaders, religious cults and mysterious lovecraftian threats, is equal parts compelling and comedic – sketching a landscape populated with interesting and unusual characters. The roguelike game features multiple campaigns where the player-character is (usually) a new arrival in various steampunk/science-fantasy cities. The end goal of this journey is to decide on the path your character's life should take, and the game comes to a close once you've gained the sigils of a particular lifestyle (e.g. Equipped with a speeder bike and the ability to gracefully glide across long distances, you explore deserts and canyons, uncover treasure, and talk with the other inhabitants of the world. You start the game in a small village of mask-wearing nomads, on the eve of a coming-of-age ceremony that sees you leave your home in order to decide on the sort of person you want to be – literally and figuratively. Fundamentally, Sable works as an elegant metaphor for growing up, expressed via soothing, lo-fi open world explorations and a stunning artistic identity that never wears thin. The short answer is a resounding and moving yes. But was there a game underneath the initial visual impact? Its instantly recognisable art – in the form of grand cel-shaded vistas and a goat-headed character bouncing over multi-coloured sand dunes – was always destined to be GIFed and tweeted. Sable, the debut game from developer Shedworks, had a lot to live up to.
